Angkor Wat is the largest monument built in the early 12th century. This temple was constructed by a Hindu king and is dedicated to the god Vishnu. Besides its fascinating history, Angkor Wat is also one of the best places for tourists to visit, especially to see the sunrise. It is particularly beautiful during the equinoxes, which occur on March 21st and September 23rd.
Angkor Thom was the capital city built in the late 12th century. Inside its walls are many remarkable temples:
Bayon: The state temple built by a Buddhist king, dedicated to Mahayana Buddhism. It is decorated with 49 towers, each featuring four faces.
Baphuon: This mountain temple has a pyramid shape and was built in the 11th century as a Hindu temple.
Royal Palace Enclosure: The Royal Palace served as the residence for Khmer kings from the late 9th century to the 15th century. Within the royal complex:
Phimeanakas: Known as the “Sky Palace,” this Hindu temple was built in the late 10th century.
Terrace of the Elephants and Terrace of the Leper King: These two terraces are close to each other but served different functions. The Terrace of the Elephants was used as a royal pavilion where the king observed military processions and met with his people. In front of this terrace is another temple with 12 towers, called the Suroprat Temple.
Victory Gate: Located on the east side of Angkor Thom, this is the main entrance to the city. It’s a great spot for photos before leaving the site.
Ta Keo: This temple symbolizes Mount Kailash and was built in the late 10th century by a Hindu king.
Lunch break at a restaurant near the temple area.
Ta Prohm: Famous for its appearance in the movie Tomb Raider, Ta Prohm is a Mahayana Buddhist temple built in the late 12th century. It is renowned for the large trees growing over the ruins, creating a mystical atmosphere—perfect for photography. Its popularity skyrocketed after Hollywood filmmakers chose it as the filming location in 2001.
Banteay Kdei: Another Buddhist temple built in the late 12th century by the same king as Ta Prohm. It’s a quiet, serene place that no tourist should miss.
